KOANS
and up the stairs

Capybara was having recurring dreams. The dreams started one day in late summer when a heat wave hung over the zoo, making all the animals drowsy. The dream started the same way each time, with capybara falling down a deep hole. It was just like "alice in wonderland", but he didn't remember stepping into the hole, only the sudden sensation of falling as he tumbled through the air. He never felt afraid. In fact, he cheered up, because he knew he was in the dream, and felt he might find something at the end. He hoped it would be an interesting treasure - maybe an ancient scroll? After a long while, his fall began to slow down. Then his paws gradually touched onto soft dirt. He always opened his eyes as wide as he could, but he could never see in the dream. There was just blinding whiteness, so he could only rely on touch and his sense of direction, pausing as he went. Feeling the dirt beneath his paws, he slowly stepped forward. The ground sloped up, leading him to a set of stairs. He followed the long set of stairs, which seemed to meander and twist with no logic. He went up at first, breathing hard with exhaustion as the stairs got steeper. Then they dropped, going down and down into the unknown depths. Eventually, he ended up at a wall. He ran his paws over the wall, looking for a breach. He encountered a small hole, and suddenly knew he should look into it. He pressed one eye to the hole, but saw only blinding light. He knew he would have to have the dream again.
