KOANS
sun-dial

Capybara knocked on the door. There was no response. He checked the address again, peering around at the neighboring buildings. The entrance was unmistakable, a pair of shuttered wooden doors, so low to the ground that capybara had to kneel to read the house numbers. He knocked again, more confidently this time. A beak emerged from between the shutters. "What do you want?", a voice croaked. "I'm looking for the head historian. A Ms. Koo?" The doors burst open. A ruffled pigeon stood in the doorway with her red eyes fixed on Capybara. "They fired Ms. Koo. Caught her laying eggs in the neighbor's yard. I'm assistant historian. It's nine o'clock." She grabbed the doors with her talons and slammed them shut. Capybara was unsure what to do. "Wait, miss... assistant historian? Hello?" No response. Capybara sighed and knocked again. The doors banged open. "IT'S NINE O'ONE!" the historian yelled. She moved to close the doors but capybara interjected, "MISS PIGEON?" She paused. "I'm not looking for the time, I came here for the history lesson," capybara explained. The historian cocked her head, ripped out a loose feather from her rear end with her beak, and blinked. "Well, come in on. Nice to have someone show up for the history lesson." She disappeared into the building. Capybara ducked down and crawled after her. Inside was a small but well-lit room. The sun shone in from above through a large skylight. Miss pigeon sat down on a pile of sticks, nesting behind what looked like a round stone table covered in papers. A long, thin slab of stone jutted out of the stacks of papers like a sail. "A sun dial," she explained. "Only thing we had space for, so I use it as a desk. I keep my letters on it." Capybara nodded. "Let's not dally dilly. Here's the history lesson. Today, we're learning about war. First, there was the Battle of Akroinon. Heard of it?" She didn't wait for a response. "You haven't heard of it. Well, the Battle of Akroinon was all about WAXCHANDLERY. Next up, the Siege of Minerve. Little known fact, but it was an important historical example of GELATINATION. Finally, the Recovery of RĂ© island. An important military campaign motivated by HABERDASHERY. Questions?" Capybara stared at her. "I'm afraid I don't understand -" "Why animals had all these battles and seiges? Few animals do. But I'm confident you'll find the answer. It's a bit mixed up, but you've got the sundial", Miss pigeon responded in a muffled voice, as she started preening her feathers. "Oh! Look at the time! I need to go get breakfast. I'll be right back." She flew out the door.
